Dan Taylor

iFred is working to eliminate the stigma of depression with the launch of the Field of Hope in Ghana in 2009. This initiative, managed in Accra by Dan Taylor, will focus on educating all on how depression affects those in Africa, and help raise money for depression worldwide. We chose Africa for our field this year to highlight and educate just how poorly the disease is understood.

Form of "Treatment" in Ghana

Of the 21.5 million people living in Ghana, over 2.8 million people are struggling with a mental disease. Unfortunately, less than 2% of these people are getting proper treatment. Many in Ghana and Africa trace mental problems to superstition and other ingrained beliefs, and a number are sent to 'spiritual camps', chained to trees and objects, and made to fast and pray for weeks in the hot sun to exorcise the supposed demonic spirits. The laws are 30 years old and do nothing to protect the individual - this must change.

Learn more about Ghana from the World Health Organization's report. Also learn about current legislation being proposed (PDF) and how the bill came about (PDF) and help us support a progressive mental health law that focuses on human rights and voice your support of this law. Please also considering planting a seed to demonstrate the importance of this symbolic planting.
